I’ve talked before about how Emma’s at this in-between phase of reading that makes choosing a Bible for her a bit of a task. We want one that she can comprehend, but we also want the stories to be interesting and challenging for her to read. The little storybook Bibles she’s been using seem to be getting a bit juvenile for her.
So I was thrilled to receive a copy of The Beginning Reader’s Bible from Tommy Nelson. This one may have hit it on the nose for the type of reading level we’re looking for. The Bible stories are written in a more Bible-esque (is that a word?) format with the chapters and verses labeled. Not every single chapter and verse of the Bible is included, but having them labeled is a great way to get kids ready for reading a grown-up Bible.
I think my favorite feature of The Beginning Reader’s Bible is the set of hands-on activities in each story. You’ll find a Remember God’s Word memory verse, a Pray God’s Word prayer, and a Do God’s Word call to action. For example, at the end of the creation story, the kids are challenged to go outside, look at what God created, and draw a picture of something they’re thankful God created. What a great way to cement what they just read!
We usually do Emma’s Bible reading before bedtime, but I’m thinking about using this Bible as part of her homeschooling activities. That way we could do the activities right then and there instead of reading them at night and doing them the next day.

I would absolutely love to win this for my daughter. She is almost 5 and beginning to read words on her own, and we are working through the 2nd time on her current bible devotion book. when trying to help her memorize scripture we break it into small segments and make her repeat them back and then do it all at once a few times.

I have to admit we havent made it to the bible yet with our kids – ages 4, 3 (tomorrow!), & 1. We are however teaching our son some prayers. We do want to start soon on teaching the bible so this would be perfect!

We have a different verse we try to memorize as a family every week. One way we make it fun is by playing a game. We go around the room, one person says the first word, the second person says the next word and so on.

We play a lot of memory games…one in particular is putting each word of the verse on a different index card, mixing them up and putting them back in order.
