We human beings are selfish creatures by nature, but a generous spirit is something that we CAN help our kids cultivate.
Today we had our first-ever garage sale. (Thanks to those of you gave such great advice on Facebook!) Since it was a bit chilly for lemonade, Emma decided to sell apple cider. We also made a deal with her about selling a particular item from her bedroom and letting her keep the money from it. Between the item selling and the apple cider, she made just over $20 today. She was super-excited! I knew it was the perfect time to start talking about tithing.
I explained to her how Mommy and Daddy set aside 10% of whatever we make from our business, and we give that as our tithe. We talked a little about the concept, and she really got it. So she put $2 aside and has it ready to be put into the offering plate at church tomorrow.
I’m so proud of her willingness to GIVE. Teaching generosity is something that we’ve been intentional about for quite a while. Each year when the Salvation Army bells start ringing, we make sure we have change in the car and drop it in as we walk by. We also share hand-me-down clothes and toys with friends and family. We may not give huge amounts at once, but we try to model sharing what we have with other people. Emma has definitely followed.
Do you have any creative ways to teach kids about giving?
God loves a cheerful giver.
